Increasingly, the bigger challenge is knowing whether the show will happen at all. Kunal Kamra speaks about a world of last-minute cancellations, police concerns, venue uncertainty and performances where plans remain tentative until the final curtain falls. As spaces for politically charged comedy become harder to secure, independent performers are increasingly looking beyond domestic venues and towards international audiences. Shows can face last-minute disruptions, leaving artists and organisers unsure whether a performance will go ahead until the very last moment. “पहले लगता है कि पुलिस आ जाएगी कभी भी कैंसिल हो सकता है” [03:14] [03:24] NOTHING IS CERTAIN UNTIL THE FINAL BOW The uncertainty has become part of the routine. Kamra describes a situation where even travel plans are sometimes finalised only after a performance has successfully concluded. “जैसे मेरा शो हुआ कि हां हो रहा है शो एक शो हो गया फिर मैंने जाने की टिकट बुक की” [03:24] When a show itself is uncertain, everything around it remains provisional. [04:07] THE RISK OF SHOWING UP The pressure is not limited to performers. Audiences, organisers and artists all find themselves navigating uncertainty around controversial public events. “तो अपने रिस्क पे आए हैं सर मतलब रेखा गुप्ता ने कहा हम गुड़गांव बैठे हैं हम सब अपने रिस्क पे आए हैं” [04:07] The result is an unusual reality where attending a comedy show can itself become part of a wider political conversation. [04:31] WHEN EVENTS FACE CANCELLATION The concerns around public events extend beyond stand-up comedy. Kamra points to the cancellation of a programme at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club involving discussions around Europe and Asia. “फॉरेन कॉरेस्पोंडेंस क्लब में एक कार्यक्रम था यूरोप और एशिया के ऊपर वो दिल्ली पुलिस ने कैंसिल करवा दिया” [04:31] The larger debate is about where the line is drawn between public order, administrative authority and the freedom to hold public discussions.
