GOALIE TRAINING TIPS BY MATTI KORHONEN.com: You can pick up lots of great drills and techniques from this video even the clips are from a game warm up. For example, skating drills he does in the video he does at team practices on daily/weekly basis. So next time at your own practice while you are waiting your turn to get into the net why wouldn’t you do these drills too or something similar?
WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO:
Tracking:
See how his head turns and he follows the puck with the body even he doesn’t do it at full speed.
You can’t always take every shot with 100% speed / intensity but you can always have 100% focus. This is great example of it.
Butterfly:
Great knee and hip control makes hands faster and gives better upper body control.
Movement / skating:
Pay attention to skate blade usage and how he is sifting his weight.
Splits / Flexibility / Mobility:
How Bob jumps up from full splits position into wide stance is something I have never seen anyone else do. When you are strong in extreme positions your body can do all kinds of things. To play pro you have to be flexible and there really aren’t stiff pro goalies if you compare them to general public. Just flexible ones and ones with extraordinary flexibility.
Coaches who have never achieved good flexibility themselves or try to be popular on social media tend to down play the importance of flexibility and strength in extreme positions. You recognise those coaches easily because they say things like ”flexibility is not that important”, ”flexibility is over rated” or ”stretching is bad for you”. It is true that you don’t want bone to bone grind, you don't want to force something your body can’t do and not everyone has hips for splits but when was the last time you saw someone force the splits or other position over the point where it hurts? Or when was the last time you heard someone get injured due to stretching?
But ”my hips are not made for splits.” My question: How do you know? Only X-ray and MRI can truly tell you this. I have seen a study saying that physical therapists don't get it right that often how when examining your range of motion capability (capability, not where you are at the moment). Who has told you that you can’t do splits? When my knees hurt I was told by some of the leading knee specialist in the country that I will not play hockey again (I was 13 at the time).
My point is that if you wanna be flexible you have to put work in on daily basis. If you are stiff and ”don’t believe in stretching” then there is a clear reason for you being stiff.
Wanna jump from splits position like Bob? Good way to start is by stretching 5-10min after every practice, have 1-2 longer stretching sessions in a week and lifting weights 2-4x / week with movements mainly going into full range of motion. Even if your body may not have been made the way that it is possible for you to jump from full splits but you can still get extremely strong in extreme positions.
