VW Lupo 1.4i How to Replace Clutch and Flywheel 1998-2005

General Workflow ​The engine is transverse (sideways), so the gearbox is always on the driver's side (left side of the engine bay). The steps are: • ​Top-side prep: Remove the battery, battery tray, and air box to access the top transmission bolts and the shift cables. • ​Disconnection: Disconnect the starter motor, the reverse light switch, and the clutch slave cylinder (tip: unbolt the cylinder but leave the hydraulic line connected to avoid bleeding the system later). • ​Bottom-side prep: Drain the gear oil (optional but recommended), remove the inner CV joints from the gearbox flanges (usually using an M8 or M10 XZN/Triple Square bit), and remove the "dogbone" pendulum mount. • ​Support & Drop: Support the engine with a brace or jack, remove the transmission mount, and pull the gearbox away from the block. ​2. Minor Variations to Watch For ​While the "how-to" is the same, the clearance differs: • ​Polo/Fabia/Ibiza (A04 Platform): The engine bay is tighter.
