“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” Once a famous port town, Mandvi is a charming town in the Kutch region of the Indian state of Gujarat. It was once a significant part of the Kutch region and is named after the revered Sage Mandavya from the Mahabharata. Mandvi used to be a famous port and is now a popular tourist destination. It is also the seventh destination of my Gujarat trip. At the estuary where the river Rukmavati meets the Gulf of Kutch, the Maharao of the princely state of Kutch founded this port town. It was a significant commercial hub at the time. To house the Kharva families, who were known for their expertise in crafting wooden ships, the settlement was constructed inside a fortified stronghold. Traditional shipbuilding from wood can be seen along the old port at the mouth of the Rukmavati river. This 400-year-old industry still uses traditional methods of building the ship plank by plank. 58 kilometers to the southwest of Bhuj is Mandvi. Public and private buses connect the city with all the main Gujarati cities. Roadways, airways, and railways well link Bhuj with rest of India.
