For tonight's Halloween psychedelic trip I’m spinning my 1980 UK CBS pressing of Roky Erickson And The Aliens (CBS 84463) for Halloween - the debut studio LP from the 13th Floor Elevators founder who coined the term “horror rock” the same year this came out. Then I’m staying with Roky through four of his early solo singles and closing the stream with live footage I shot at Roky shows over the years.

The album was produced by Stu Cook, former bassist of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Aliens were Duane Aslaksen on guitar, Steve Burgess on bass, Fuzzy Furioso on drums, and Bill Miller on electric autoharp. Sessions started at The Church in San Anselmo in December 1978. CBS refused Roky’s chosen title The Evil One, so the UK sleeve has no words at all, just five Theban-script symbols that gave the record its collector nickname Five Symbols. The US version came out a year later on 415 Records as The Evil One.
Zombies, vampires, demons, Lucifer, atom-brain creatures. “I Walked With A Zombie” takes its title from the 1943 Val Lewton film. “Creature With The Atom Brain” from the 1955 B-movie. “Night Of The Vampire” reimagines a 1961 Joe Meek instrumental. Roky wrote much of this material at Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane during his 1969-1972 incarceration, reworking Christian lyrics by replacing God and Jesus with Satan and Lucifer.
After the album, we’re going chronological through four early solo singles:
Mars Records NO. 1000 (1975 US) - Roky’s debut solo single, produced by Doug Sahm in Austin, credited to R. Ericson & Bleibalien. “Bleib” is an anagram for “Bible” per Roky himself.
Virgin VS 180 (1977 UK) - “Bermuda” b/w “The Interpreter”. Early Aliens on a UK pressing from the same CBS plant that would press the 1980 album three years later.
Sponge SPEP-101 (1977 France) - The four-song French EP including Roky’s own 13th Floor Elevators song “I Have Always Been Here Before” revisited solo. 1000 copies pressed with green sleeves due to a printer’s error.
Light In The Attic LITA 45-027 (2013 US) - Record Store Day 7" of “Mine Mine Mind” b/w “Bloody Hammer” pulled from the Aliens sessions. 4000 hand-numbered copies on psychedelic pink swirl vinyl.
Dynamic Records DY-002 (1984 US) - “Don’t Slander Me” b/w “Starry Eyes”. The 1984 bookend to the 1975 debut, Doug Sahm connection still carrying through.
