Labor Day at Concrete Beach: Chicago Lakefront to the Playpen

The late-summer sun bakes the terraced ledges of Concrete Beach, radiating heat against the cool breeze rolling off Lake Michigan. I start out on the wide, golden sand of North Avenue Beach. Labor Day crowds are firmly settled in for the afternoon, with volleyballs suspended over active nets and folding chairs dotting the shoreline in front of the ocean-liner profile of the beach house. Moving south, I leave the yielding sand behind for the paved lakefront promenade of Lincoln Park. Mature trees cast deep, cooling shade over the grassy lawns, breaking up the bright glare of the sky before the corridor narrows. Ahead, the shoreline hardens into the stepped seawall that gives Concrete Beach its name. Sunbathers stretch out across the warm slabs, sharing the narrow margin between the choppy turquoise water and the rush of traffic on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. I push forward toward Oak Street Beach. Dense clusters of waders pack the sand there, crowded beneath the towering limestone and brick of the Gold Coast. Down along the concourse, the pink walls of an underpass ramp lead past the steady hum of a beachside patio, where vines climb the trellises beneath a dark shade canopy. Rounding the curve past the sand, the dark steel-and-glass grids of modernist high-rises loom directly across the drive. The lake deepens to a richer blue out here along the Streeterville seawall. Offshore, hundreds of yachts and powerboats anchor together in the massive holiday gathering known as the Playpen.
