🪺 Greater Roadrunner life cycle: 80 days from two eggs to two desert hunters, inside one cholla cactus nest in Arizona's Sonoran Desert.
A new breeding season begins on a dry wash. A male Greater Roadrunner calls from a low rock, bows, lifts his tail, and offers a small lizard. The female accepts, and the pair walks together toward a thicket of cholla cactus. There, protected by a wall of spines, they build a shallow cup of sticks.
Two eggs appear. Both parents take turns on the nest through the desert heat. The first chick breaks out on day 27, the second on day 28, and from then on every small meal has to be divided. When prey grows scarce, one chick keeps waiting while its sibling is fed. The father goes out again across open ground to find a single lizard, and a coyote is already walking the same path.

🔎 Did you know? Greater Roadrunner eggs are incubated for about 19–20 days, and the young usually leave the nest roughly 18–21 days after hatching — which is why a brood that hatches a day apart can stay a day apart all the way to independence.
