The frozen margarita machine. German chocolate cake. Cheetos. The State Fair corny dog. Some of America's most famous foods and drinks were invented in Dallas, perfected in Dallas, or turned into national brands from Dallas, and most people have no idea.
In this video, we count down 10 foods with surprising Dallas origins, and we're honest about which claims are rock solid and which are disputed. Meet the corporate recruiter who figured out how to fry beer, the computer analyst who fried Coca-Cola, the vaudeville brothers behind the Fletcher's corny dog, "King Sammie" Bert and his 1929 Dallas snow cone machine patent, the Frito Company test kitchen where Cheetos were born, the Dallas executive who turned a Disneyland snack into Doritos, the Dallas homemaker whose 1957 newspaper recipe created German chocolate cake, and the restaurant owner who turned a soft-serve ice cream machine into the world's first frozen margarita machine, now in the Smithsonian. Plus the convenience store's birth in Oak Cliff, the Slurpee and Big Gulp, Helen Corbitt, and the $250 Neiman Marcus cookie myth.
Which of these did you already know came from Dallas? Tell us in the comments.
