India’s borrowing habits have changed dramatically over the past decade. Earlier, first-time borrowers were more likely to take loans for agriculture, Kisan Credit Cards or two-wheelers. Today, consumer durable loans for smartphones, refrigerators, washing machines and other everyday products are becoming a major entry point into formal credit.
According to the TransUnion CIBIL and FIDC study, NBFCs accounted for 50% of loans given to New-to-Credit (NTC) customers in the quarter ended June 2026, compared with just 24% in the same period in 2016.
Consumer durable loans accounted for 30% of NTC loans during January-June 2026, while 93% of consumer durable loans were below ₹50,000.
But what does this shift mean for Indian consumers? Are EMIs making credit more accessible, or are people increasingly borrowing for comfort and lifestyle purchases?
Watch the full video to understand how India’s credit landscape has changed and what the growing EMI culture means for borrowers.
