The Man Who Wrestled With God and Survived

One night. Alone. In the dark. On the eve of the most terrifying moment of his life. And then a stranger appeared — and attacked him. They wrestled until dawn. And when the stranger could not overpower him, he dislocated Jacob's hip with a touch. Still, Jacob refused to let go. He demanded one thing above everything else. A blessing. Genesis 32 contains one of the most bizarre, haunting, and profoundly personal encounters in all of Scripture. A man — identified in the same passage as God himself — wrestles through the night with the patriarch Jacob at a place called Peniel. Jacob walks away limping. But he also walks away transformed, carrying a new name that would define an entire nation: Israel. Which means, in Hebrew, he who struggles with God.
