Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s Anādi Karama-Phale is a desperate prayer from a soul lost in the ocean of material existence. Carried away by the consequences of countless past actions, battered by desire, anger, greed, and pride, the soul finds itself without solid ground or any shore in sight. Every attempt at self-rescue proves futile, until only one possibility remains: to call upon Kṛṣṇa for shelter. This interpretation transforms the traditional Bengali bhajan into an exceptionally dark country chamber piece. A solitary female voice moves through a sparse, almost funereal arrangement of piano, trumpet, and cello. The instruments seem to drift around the singer like the currents of an unforgiving sea, while the recurring plea gradually becomes the emotional center of the song. Yet beneath its darkness, Anādi Karama-Phale is ultimately a song about surrender rather than despair. When every illusion of independence has fallen away, the prayer becomes simple: “O Kṛṣṇa, I have nowhere else to go. Take me to the shore.” For the full experience visit: https://echoesofvraja.vercel.app/ LYRICS Anādi Karama-Phale – Take Me to the Shore VERSE 1 By the deeds of lives without a start, I fell into this endless sea. No shore appears before my eyes, no ground beneath my feet. The waves rise up and pull me down, they carry me away. Desire and anger, greed and pride— they never let me rest. CHORUS O Krishna, hear me calling. I have nowhere else to go. I’m drowning in this ocean, Lord— take me to the shore. VERSE 2 This body is a house of pain, these senses drag me on. I follow every fleeting hope, then find the hope is gone. Old age is waiting down the road, and death is waiting too. Still this foolish heart of mine forgets to turn to You. CHORUS O Krishna, hear me calling. I have nowhere else to go. I’m drowning in this ocean, Lord— take me to the shore. VERSE 3 Bound by all that I have done, I cannot free myself. No strength of mine can carry me, no wisdom I possess. Bhaktivinoda bows his head and calls upon Your name: O Krishna, take this fallen soul and shelter me again. FINAL CHORUS O Krishna, hear me calling. I have nowhere else to go. I’m drowning in this ocean, Lord— take me to the shore.
