Prehistoric labyrinth at Bannerghatta - 'Bannerghatta' is a very popular tourist spot in Bengaluru. It is popular for Bannerghatta Zoo Was declared as National Park in 1974 The many artifacts found here which points to the settlement from Neolithic age ie history dating back to 7000 years And this is the reason why we also find legends of this place related to the times of Ramayana and Mahabharata. This place is also home to the tribal settlement of Hakki Pikki. They also maintain their rituals and practices in todays modern world. So in Bannerghatta we find many megalithic structures of that time. We find here a very unique structure. Its a ciscular stone labyrinth ( La-brinth) also known as '7 tiered fort' and in local language its also known as 'yeLu sutthina kote' The 'Labyrinth' can be understood as a similar structre to chakravyuh...multilayeer formations of cirlcles .. What is unique abvout this structure is that this prehistoric sytructre is unique and rare.. there are some squar shaped stone La-brinth foind in Tamil Nadu, but this one is rare. In older prehistoric times we have seen such structueres carved out on stone or made like this across the world. What is the purpose of these structures is still not known. The earliest documented labyrinth in India is from Usgalimal in Goa, which is in the form of an engraving on the rock bed. Such carvings can also be seen on 12th Century, Sri Hoysaleshwara Temple, Halebeedu. Such structures are also found in many European countries. The stone structure which you see is located in the Bannerghatta forest. When you walk down from Champakdham swamy temple to Suvarnumkhi kalyani and temple you will find this structure on the way.
