Free GIS mapping for every classroom: see how National Geographic MapMaker, hosted by Esri, turns K-12 students into hands-on explorers.
MapMaker is a free, interactive mapping tool with hundreds of data layers that students can combine to build their own maps and answer their own questions. In this video, students layer ocean surface temperature against coral bleaching, compare light pollution with the world's cities, map mushroom populations by humidity, and watch ocean currents in motion. They can also measure distances and sketch directly on the map.
For teachers, MapMaker ties directly to science learning standards, with layers that bring topics like weather patterns to life. It supports project-based learning: students pick up a tablet and start exploring on their own, discovering patterns in how the world works. A new teaching hub offers lesson plans and guidance for bringing MapMaker into K-12 courses, built through the partnership between Esri and National Geographic.
