🎙️ How do we make peace with the harm of the past without becoming trapped by guilt? In this classic 1996 recovery presentation, Father Joseph C. Martin explores forgiveness and the essential role it can play in lasting recovery. Recovery & Forgiveness was produced as part of Father Martin’s extensive series of educational films on alcoholism and recovery. Contemporary catalogs describe the approximately 45-minute program as an examination of sincerely seeking forgiveness from those we have harmed, resolving guilt, forgiving ourselves, and learning to forgive those who have hurt us. Father Martin begins with guilt. Rather than treating guilt only as something destructive, he considers how it can alert us that our actions have violated our own values. Recovery gives us an opportunity to look honestly at those actions instead of continuing to hide from them. A detailed review of the film connects this discussion with personal inventory and the process of recognizing harm we have caused. But recognizing the past is only the beginning. Father Martin moves from guilt toward responsibility. When we have harmed someone, a sincere apology is not primarily an explanation or justification for our behavior. It requires acknowledging what we did, accepting responsibility for it, and becoming willing to make things right where possible. That naturally connects with the amends process found in the Twelve Steps. A.A.’s Eighth Step asks members to identify those they have harmed and become willing to make amends; Step Nine calls for direct amends wherever possible, except when doing so would cause further harm. Father Martin also emphasizes something particularly difficult: We cannot control whether another person forgives us. An apology may be sincere and an amends may be offered honestly, yet the person we hurt may still be angry, unwilling, or simply not ready. Father Martin teaches that recovery requires us to take responsibility for our side of the street without demanding a particular response from someone else. And forgiveness does not flow in only one direction. Martin was a Sulpician priest, recovering alcoholic, educator, and pioneer in the alcoholism-treatment field. After entering treatment for his own alcoholism in 1958, Father Martin devoted much of his life to helping others understand alcoholism without shame or condemnation. His educational presentations became widely used in treatment programs, hospitals, schools, military programs, and recovery communities. He later co-founded Father Martin’s Ashley, now Ashley Addiction Treatment, which opened in Maryland in 1983.
