Diocesan Women Embrace Diversified Agriculture and the 4-Acre Model Farming Approach Hoima, Uganda — August 2026: A new agricultural transformation message is gaining momentum among Christian women following a diocesan women’s conference that equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills in agricultural diversification, the 4-Acre Model Farming approach, farm planning, enterprise selection and household income generation. The training, facilitated by Dr. Lubega Richard, brought together women with a shared interest in strengthening household livelihoods through productive and sustainable use of available land. Rather than viewing agriculture simply as a means of producing food, participants were challenged to begin looking at their land as an economic asset capable of supporting multiple enterprises and generating sustainable household income when properly planned and managed. From Listening to Taking Action One of the most significant outcomes of the conference was the response from the women themselves. Participants shared testimonies about what they had learned and expressed their determination to return to their communities and begin applying the approaches introduced during the training. Several women also called for the training to be extended beyond the conference, promising to engage their parish and diocesan leaders to organize similar sessions in different parishes across Hoima and Fort Portal. The response demonstrated that the demand for practical agricultural knowledge is not limited to farmers’ organizations and government programmes. Church communities can also become important platforms for agricultural knowledge, skills development and household economic transformation. Turning Land into Livelihoods At the centre of Dr. Lubega Richard’s message was the need for farmers to move away from dependence on a single agricultural enterprise and instead consider diversification and planned enterprise combinations that can improve food security, spread risk and create multiple sources of income. The 4-Acre Model Farming approach was presented as one practical framework through which households can deliberately organize their available land and resources around enterprises that respond to their food, income and investment needs. The emphasis was not simply on owning land, but on asking a more important question: How can the land I have be organized and managed to improve the livelihood of my household? Through practical examples and interaction with participants, the training encouraged women to see agriculture as a business requiring planning, skills, records, market awareness and continuous improvement. Women Become Ambassadors of the Message The enthusiasm generated by the training has created an opportunity for the programme to move beyond a single conference. Women who participated are now positioned not only as beneficiaries of the training, but also as potential ambassadors of agricultural transformation within their parishes and communities. Their request for parish leaders to organize additional training sessions demonstrates the potential for a church-based approach to agricultural extension—taking practical knowledge directly to communities where people live, worship and work. The emerging message is simple: Faith communities can inspire not only spiritual transformation, but also practical transformation in the livelihoods of their members. From One Diocese to the Nation The experience has opened a broader conversation about how similar training can be taken to more Christian communities across Uganda. With thousands of Christian households depending directly or indirectly on agriculture, there is an opportunity for churches, dioceses, parishes, women’s associations, farmer groups and development organizations to create platforms where communities can access practical knowledge on agricultural diversification, the 4-Acre Model, agribusiness, household income generation and sustainable land utilization. The vision is to see more families move from subsistence-oriented agriculture towards planned, diversified and market-oriented farming. The documentary, Empowering Christian Women to Turn Land into Livelihoods, captures this journey—from the conference room to the farm, from knowledge to action, and from individual participants to a growing call for the message to reach more communities. An Invitation to Dioceses and Communities The response from the conference provides an important lesson: when people receive practical knowledge that speaks directly to their daily challenges, they want to take it home and share it with others.
