On May 31, 2013, during the record-breaking El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, The Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Bettes and his crew were tracking the storm inside their GMC Yukon SUV, known as the "Bettesmobile." As the tornado suddenly widened to a massive 2.6 miles across and rapidly shifted direction, heavy rain completely blinded their visibility, trapping the vehicle directly in the funnel's path. A powerful sub-vortex caught the Bettesmobile, launching the heavy SUV into the air, throwing it over 200 yards across a field, and causing it to roll violently multiple times. The vehicle was completely crushed into a twisted wreck, but remarkably, Mike Bettes and his two crew members survived the catastrophic crash with minor injuries and fractures.
