Major Emergency Fire Consumes Church in Historic South-Central Los Angeles

HISTORIC SOUTH CENTRAL, LOS ANGELES, Calif., Oct. 12, 2026 (KNN) – A structure fire engulfed a two-story church in the 2600 block of South Paloma Street in Los Angeles early Monday morning. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded after initial reports of heavy fire from the church around 3:30 a.m., which had previously burned on an unknown date. Upon arrival, firefighters faced significant challenges as strong winds pushed embers eastward, sparking spot fires about 200 feet away. A large ember cast prompted the Los Angeles Fire Department to call for additional engines to manage the fire’s spread. The flames threatened a one-story single-family dwelling to the south and a two-story single-family dwelling to the north. Additionally, a row of bungalows to the southeast began to catch fire, and multiple buildings around the church ignited. Firefighters implemented defensive tactics and deployed wagon batteries to suppress the ember cast. However, the situation was complicated by downed power lines, with imminent threats of high-voltage lines collapsing in front of the location. Five additional task forces were assigned to the incident after neighboring residents expressed concerns about the church being the site of possibly two previous fires. A nearby two-story Victorian-style home was also reported to be fully ablaze. ----------------------------------------------------- Detailed story information and video licensing requests can be found by visiting https://keynews.tv.
