What if your place in society was decided before you ever had a chance to choose it?
In the Ottoman Empire, your family, religion, occupation, and social position could shape almost every part of your life. Where you lived, what you could do, who you interacted with, and the opportunities available to you were all influenced by where you stood in the empire's complex social hierarchy.
But Ottoman society wasn't simply divided into rich and poor.
There were soldiers, scholars, merchants, artisans, farmers, religious communities, administrators, enslaved people, and powerful elites, each occupying different positions within a vast imperial system.
So what would your life have looked like if you were born there?
This video explores the social hierarchy of the Ottoman Empire and what everyday life could look like depending on where you were born.
