"The Roads Must Roll," a classic episode of the X Minus One radio drama, envisions a future where automated conveyor-belt highways have replaced traditional roads and automobiles. When disgruntled engineers go on strike to demand better treatment, civilization threatens to collapse, forcing management to fight for system control. Based on Robert A. Heinlein's famous 1940 short story, the episode's plot follows a highly organized, nationwide transit system of giant, motorized, conveyor-belt highways moving at speeds between 5 to 100 miles per hour. Because cars and trains have been dismantled, these "roads" are the lifeblood of the nation's commerce and travel. However, the engineers who maintain the system—without whom the roads simply cannot roll—are exploited. A militant union leader convinces the workers to strike. They halt the roads, taking control of a major hub and threatening national chaos unless their extreme demands are met. The story focuses on Chief Engineer Larry Gaines and Transportation Chief Hobart Carter. Instead of negotiating immediately, they take decisive and courageous action. By working through the loyal junior mechanics, the management team subdues the strike leaders, regains control of the transit hubs, and restarts the system before society completely breaks down.
