Hood5six: Vermin Womb 10/6/2022 The Brooklyn Monarch Brooklyn, NY

Here's a band I've had the privilege of seeing a couple times, but never thought I'd be able to feature on here after they called it a day in 2018. Thankfully they decided it was too soon and came back together not long after. The world as it is now needs Colorado's Vermin Womb now more than ever. Some years ago there was a sick band called Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire (CTTTOAFF for short), which would exist from 2006 to 2013, and in that time made some of the sickest material. It was a delicious mix of Sludge, Doom, Grindcore, a little Death Metal/Deathgrind, and some added elements of Punk/Hardcore urgency delivered through some of the most tortured vocals you've ever heard, a mountain of tone, masterful drumming, and an abundance of riffs. Unfortunately I missed both times they came to New York, but one of our staff members made ever NYC appearance they did, and says I missed out for sure. Fortunately vocalist/guitarist Ethan Lee McCarthy wasn't about to call it a day, so he started two new bands that seemed split the concept of CTTTOAFF in half. On one hand you have the highly beloved and respected trio that is Primitive Man, who came away with all of Clinging to the Trees' Sludge and Doom elements but on steroids, creating something darker and more sonically intimidating. Then you have the Blackened Death Grind trio Vermin Womb who sound like the logical evolution of CTTTOAFF's faster elements but more blackened, straight forward assault that barely lets up. Makes sense since Clinging to the Trees drummer JP Damon joined McCarthy (he's one of the best drummers going right now). I was blessed to see Primitive Man with Mortiferum, Jarhead Fertilizer, and Candlemass last summer, but also getting the opportunity to see Vermin Womb again was a delight. I might not have ever gotten the chance to see Clinging to the Trees, but I got to see the two excellent bands that came from those ashes.
