Moscow was first mentioned in historical chronicles in 1147, and the Kremlin fortress was established on its current site just nine years later, in 1156, forming what eventually became the city's original historic core area. By 1326, Moscow had become the center of Russian Orthodoxy, and after leading a united Russian army to victory over the invading Mongols, it emerged as the capital of a newly unified Russian state by the late 15th century. Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712, but Lenin restored Moscow as the seat of government on March 12, 1918, and the city officially became the capital of the entire Soviet Union in 1922 as well, permanently. The Moscow Metro opened on May 15, 1935, with its first line running 11.2 kilometers through 13 ornate stations, and it has since grown into one of the busiest and most elaborate subway systems found anywhere on Earth today. The city's population has climbed to roughly 13.3 million residents as of 2024, making Moscow easily one of the most populous cities found anywhere across the entire European continent today, by a very wide margin indeed.
