Des Hoyaa Pardes is a 2004 Indian Punjabi-language film, directed by Manoj Punj, starring Gurdas Maan, Juhi Chawla, Divya Dutta and Anup Soni. It won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi. Plot: Set in the aftermath of the 1984 assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the story follows Gurshan Singh Somal, a peaceful farmer from Punjab whose life is upended by rising anti-Sikh sentiment and police brutality. After being falsely accused of harboring weapons, Gurshan is tortured by corrupt officers led by Inspector Randhawa, who is more focused on faking militant encounters than justice. Despite brief relief, Gurshan and his family are repeatedly targeted. His sister Guddi is also imprisoned and harassed when she tries to defend him. With the help of his friend Darshan Singh Gill, Gurshan escapes to the U.S. on a hockey visa and is granted political asylum. He later brings his wife Jassi and son to join him. But when his father suffers a heart attack, Gurshan risks everything and returns to India to fulfill his sister's marriage. Despite completing his duty, he is spotted by the police and tragically shot dead. The film ends on a powerful note—highlighting how one’s homeland can become hostile due to corruption and communal hatred, turning a citizen into an outsider in their own country.
