I arrived in Bagendon at around 6am with no particular expectations. It is tiny, secluded and far away from the busy Cotswolds villages most visitors know.But this became one of my favourite recent walks. It had rained during the night, leaving the lanes wet and the countryside incredibly fresh. The morning light was beautiful, the colours of the trees and fields were so rich that I barely needed to colour-correct the footage, and birdsong seemed to follow me throughout the village. What struck me most was Bagendon’s setting. The village seems to disappear down into the landscape — you begin higher up, then follow the lane downhill past old Cotswold stone cottages, with fields, woodland and open countryside surrounding you. It felt wild, hidden and wonderfully peaceful. No talking. No music. During the Late Iron Age, the area around Bagendon was an important settlement. Archaeologists have identified it as a territorial oppidum — one of a small number of large Iron Age centres known in England. Archaeological evidence, including evidence of coin production, suggests that Bagendon was an important centre of activity before the Roman conquest of Britain. That makes the contrast with the village today quite remarkable: a place that now feels almost hidden among fields and woodland once occupied a much more significant position in the landscape. At the heart of the village stands the beautiful Church of St Margaret. The building has possible Saxon origins, with surviving parts dating from the 12th century. Inside is an early 11th-century font, around a thousand years old.
