L Jay Silvester 2005 Sportsmanship and Athletics Award

L. Jay Silvester Jay Silvester (born 27 August,1937) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the discus throw. He competed for the United States in the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany in the discus throw where he won the silver medal. He has represented the state and nation on four different Olympic Teams (1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976) and set six world records in discus throwing. He pioneered a unique technique in discus throwing and has written three books on the subject, the most recent being published in 2003. At age 67, he is still going strong and continues to train young boys to throw the discus six days a week. Pioneers of Progress: The Days of '47 recognizes modern-day pioneering accomplishments of men and women who have notably uplifted and benefited humanity, and the organization encourages and teaches pioneering principles.
