The Substance of Things Hoped For — Assurance Like a Title Deed. Faith is knowing and obeying God, not having God meet my desires. This sermon takes Hebrews 11:1 as its core, explaining that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” True faith is different from the “belief” of fallen human reason; it is a precious gift that God gives to His redeemed children, so that they no longer respond like the people of the world, but respond to God’s Word with obedience. Christians do not come to change God or merely to tell Him their own needs. Rather, they first listen and understand God’s Word, and then pray according to His will. The essence of faith is “believe and obey.” What is hoped for is eternal life, growing up in Christ, overcoming sin, and the glorious hope of ultimately sitting with the Lord on His throne. Although these things have not yet been seen, through faith they have already become as certain as a title deed, so that believers can lay hold of them even now. The original meaning of the word “substance” in the text is close to a title deed or proof of ownership. This shows that faith gives a sense of belonging and security to the things hoped for, even though they have not yet been received. True hope does not rest on visible earthly rewards or favorable circumstances, but on setting our minds on the unseen and eternal things. God causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him. Even when facing trials, financial pressure, or the mockery of the world (such as when Morrison came to China), believers can still joyfully dedicate themselves and continue doing good by trusting in God’s Word. The foundation of faith is the promises of Scripture, not personal reason or what can be seen with the eyes. The people of old obtained a good testimony by faith—not because they saw the promises fulfilled, but because they walked by faith and were pleasing to God. Therefore, believers should allow God’s Word to correct their reason, obtain assurance of the things not yet seen, and continue to follow the Lord firmly even in the most difficult times.
