Here's a bit of a thrash through the "Foggy Dew" on a very soggy day in Leeds. The melody is based on a Cecil Sharp transcription in his collection "English folk songs from Southern Appalachia", (although in my opinion it should be titled British Folk songs...). This version was sung by Mr Ebe Richards from Callaway in 1918. The roots seem to come from around Dorset, although to a very different tune and slightly different words, and was originally known as "The Batchelor Song". AL Lloyd recorded an early version and Ye Vagabonds do a cracking rendition also. One theory of the title the ‘Foggy Dew’ is a corruption of the ‘bugaboo’ or Bogie Man, hence the terrified and ill fated maiden. Another is the link to the bad weather on the Moors down in Dorset. The banjo is tuned fCFCDsharp
