What Happened to the Habsburgs After the Austro-Hungarian Empire Fell?

A hundred and forty-five Habsburgs lie in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna. The last Habsburg emperor is not one of them. In November 1918, Emperor Karl signed a document renouncing all participation in the affairs of state. It did not contain the word abdication, and that omission set the next seventy years in motion. Five months later the Austrian parliament passed the Habsburg Law, which barred him for life and told every other member of his house exactly what they would have to say about themselves to come home.
