In the sixth century Mecca was a trading town in a barren valley of western Arabia, and at its centre stood the Kaaba, filled with the images of many gods. This film follows Muhammad from the cave outside Mecca to Medina and back; the caliphs, the battles of Yarmuk and Qadisiyyah, and Husayn's death at Karbala; the Sufis, from Rabia to al-Hallaj and Rumi; the monk Xuanzang's journey to India, the caves of Dunhuang and Zen; the Crusades, from Pope Urban's sermon at Clermont to Saladin; and the West of the cathedrals, Francis of Assisi, the Black Death and Jan Hus, down to 1492 and the Jews' exile from Spain.
This film comes from The History of Religion, a series on our main channel, with a new opening so that it stands on its own.
