This video captures my motorcycle journey to explore the Chonra Bathak in Cholistan. While we have previously shown Chonra houses in Sindh, today we explore a rare and beautifully decorated Chonra Bathak in Cholistan that is difficult to find elsewhere in Pakistan. Deep inside the Cholistan Desert, these traditional dome-shaped structures are locally known as Gope. What makes this particular Bathak special is its colorful exterior, traditional construction techniques, unique seating arrangements, and strong connection with the local culture. This Chunra Bathak belongs to Azhar Kaladi Sahib and consists of two Gopes along with a traditional structure known locally as Sal in Saraiki. The entire Bathak was completed in approximately four months at a cost of around 1.5 million rupees. But this is much more than an ordinary place to sit. Inside the three Gopes and Sal, different seating arrangements have been created according to local preferences. One Gope has traditional beds, another provides floor seating, while the third contains benches and tables. This simple but thoughtful arrangement reflects the everyday lifestyle and hospitality of the people living in the Cholistan Desert. The construction itself is fascinating. Fine thread, thick thread, bamboo and broom materials are used for the inner coating of the Gopes, while their foundations are constructed with baked bricks and cement. Cloth is also placed beneath the roofs, creating an attractive interior while helping maintain a comfortable environment. One of the most beautiful aspects of this Cholistan traditional house is its cultural decoration. Traditional handmade sheets known as Rili and Gandhi are placed over the beds. These colorful textiles are made by local women in their homes and require considerable time and effort. A single sheet can cost around 15,000 to 16,000 rupees. The Sal represents another important part of Saraiki culture. Its cement walls and cloth-covered roof create a traditional sitting and dining space. The use of culturally significant materials and designs makes this Bathak an excellent example of how local traditions can be preserved and promoted. Another remarkable feature is the natural comfort of these traditional Gope houses. According to the local residents, they remain relatively cool during summer and warm during winter. Some of these structures can remain usable for around 15 years, after which the roof may simply need to be replaced. The final Gope contains 18 turns and three tables, providing space for gatherings and visitors. Around 30–35 people can comfortably sit inside these Gopes, and electricity has also been arranged at the Baithak. Perhaps the most heartwarming part is that this place is open to visitors, with free accommodation and food available for guests. As modern pucca houses increasingly become common in Cholistan, preserving traditional Gope and Chonra architecture becomes even more important. These structures represent the history, hospitality, craftsmanship and cultural identity of Cholistan and Saraiki communities.
