Imagine being in a close relationship with someone who always considers themselves right, shows little empathy for your feelings, and often blames you when things go wrong. How would you cope with such a situation, especially when the person is a family member or someone you cannot easily distance yourself from? Relationships with difficult people can be emotionally exhausting. When someone repeatedly dismisses our feelings, refuses to take responsibility for their actions, or makes us feel guilty for things that are not our fault, we may begin to question ourselves. Over time, this can affect our self-confidence, peace of mind, and emotional well-being. Sometimes, we may feel trapped in such relationships because the person is a close family member, a life partner, or someone with whom we share important responsibilities. Ending the relationship or completely cutting off contact may not be a practical option. In such situations, learning how to protect our emotional well-being while managing the relationship becomes especially important. In this video, Dr. Mary Matilda discusses ways to build emotional resilience when dealing with people who display self-centred behaviour, lack empathy, or frequently shift the blame onto others. Building resilience does not mean accepting every form of hurtful behaviour or remaining silent when we are treated unfairly. It means developing the emotional strength to respond thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. Setting healthy boundaries, communicating clearly, avoiding unnecessary arguments, and choosing when to engage in difficult conversations can help us manage stressful interactions more effectively. Remember, we can care about someone while still having boundaries. Watch this video to learn how to build resilience, protect your emotional well-being, and navigate difficult relationships with greater clarity, confidence, and self-respect.
