Coma Berenices You did not give the goddess your hair. You gave her what would grow again and asked her for what would not: a braid for a husband. And the sea, which takes what it is given, took hair. He came home. You cut it on the cape. By morning it was gone. A man paid to watch the sky said he had found it: there, behind the Lion, seven faint stars no one had claimed. The court applauded. And it was so. Twenty-five years. Your own son's men came for the rest of you, and took it. Of all you were, the sky has kept the part you gave away. It is still there. It is faint. I have learned where to find you. Through it, by the accident of where I stand, lies the clearest way out of our own galaxy. As far as I have ever seen, Berenice, is out through your hair. Icon: Κόμη Βερενίκης — The Lock of Berenice A panel icon of Queen Berenice II, painted as if on joined wooden planks whose seams still show through a gold ground worn to warmth with age. The grammar is Byzantine — the gold, the frontal calm, the crazed and abraded surface — but the ornament is that of Viennese Art Nouveau, whose gold was itself learned from the mosaics of Ravenna, so that the two idioms are one lineage meeting again. Her face is classically Greek, serene and unsmiling; she wears a Ptolemaic diadem, a gold fillet with a central palmette, and a violet mantle clasped at the shoulder and worked with gold. Her copper-gold hair fills the panel, sweeping outward in long waves into which bands of mosaic tesserae and gilded spirals are plaited, until hair and heaven cannot be told apart. Stars set as pearls, sapphires, amethysts and rubies are strung through the waves and joined by fine gold lines into constellations: the sky is already in her hair. The image holds the whole story at once. Berenice vowed a lock of her hair for her husband's safe return from war; it was cut, dedicated, and vanished from the altar, and the court astronomer found it among the stars — Coma Berenices, the only constellation named for a person who lived. Here the lock has not yet been cut, and has already become the sky. Love, the thing given away, and what the heavens kept. © 2026 Witold Piotr Nowak.
