How far could a crew go after Mars and still come home? This long space documentary begins with astronauts who have already reached Mars, about 2.5 years away from Earth on NASA's reference plan, and keeps sending them further into the outer Solar System. It follows them across the asteroid belt to Vesta and Ceres, past the point where sunlight stops being enough to live on, into Jupiter's radiation belts and on toward Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, looking at each stop's distance, its delay for a message home, and what the trip would ask of the people making it. 0:00 Introduction 1:41 A crew on Mars 14:33 Into the asteroid belt 22:38 Ceres and its buried water 30:47 Where sunlight runs out 39:07 The swarms that share Jupiter's road 47:23 Inside Jupiter's magnetic bubble 55:43 Jupiter's outermost great moon 1:03:55 Saturn and Titan 1:12:30 Uranus, hours from home 1:21:11 Neptune and Triton 1:29:34 Pluto and the Kuiper belt 1:37:28 Every way home 1:55:07 Looking back toward Earth Sleeping Cosmos makes long documentaries about space for the close of the evening, to keep you company over a book or a study session, or to let sleep arrive in its own time. Each film travels a long way out among the stars and back, taking one story slowly, with the research done carefully and the telling kept soft. Good for: 🌙 Letting sleep come on a slow trip out past Jupiter 📖 Reading or studying with a crew's long road through the outer planets playing behind you 🍵 Unwinding after work, as each world drifts a little further from the Sun To read further: How Dawn's ion engines carried it to Vesta and Ceres, NASA https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system...
