Experience the atmosphere of the 12 August 2026 partial solar eclipse from a beach near Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland, with views across the Firth of Clyde towards the Isle of Arran.
Filmed (in 4K) at peak of the eclipse, this video captures the dramatic gloom as cloud covered much of the sky and the daylight noticeably faded. Although the eclipse itself was largely obscured, the changing light created some beautiful and atmospheric scenes across the coast.
Watch for crepuscular rays breaking through the clouds over Arran, rain shafts illuminated by sunlight across the Firth of Clyde, and a brief rainbow to the east just minutes after the eclipse peak. A grey heron also makes an appearance in flight.
The light improves after the peak and despite the clouds, the changing light, rolling waves and distant views make this a peaceful record of an unusual astronomical event on the west coast of Scotland.
The 12 August 2026 solar eclipse was the most significant solar eclipse visible from Scotland since 2015.
Relax to the sound of waves rolling onto the shore and enjoy the changing atmosphere of the Ayrshire coast during the eclipse.
Location: Ayrshire, west coast of Scotland, near Ardrossan
