The Wingate collective assembled before daybreak and officially joined the standard J'Ouvert route. They marched alongside the steel bands, starting near Empire Boulevard and Flatbush Avenue, chipping down the asphalt to Nostrand Avenue, before transitioning their vibrant showcase toward the main daytime West Indian American Day Parade festivities along Eastern Parkway
Wingate J'Ouvert / Sailor Ashore" refers to the legendary, long-standing traditional mas collective operated by Wingate Club, who brought their historic, high-energy Sailor Mas showcase to the streets of Brooklyn on Monday, September 7, 2026!
Wingate Club is one of the oldest and most respected traditional carnival institutions in New York. They specialize in keeping authentic Trinidadian Sailor Mas alive
The Costume Aesthetic: For 2026, their masqueraders hit the early-morning pavement dressed in immaculate, traditional all-white sailor uniforms, complete with sailor caps, authentic neckties, and custom insignia patches.
The Flour and Powder: Sailor Mas is famous for its visual interaction with baby powder. As they chipped down the route on Monday morning, the Wingate sailors threw flour and white powder into the air, clouding the street in a classic throwback to old-school Trinidad J'Ouvert
The Dance Steps: The seasoned veterans and younger masqueraders alike synchronized their movements to perform the classic "sailor chip"—a distinct, low-to-the-ground sliding dance step that mimics a drunken sailor navigating rough seas.
