In Episode 2 of our six-part series restoring Odette, a 100-year-old wooden sailing dinghy designed by Morgan Giles, the restoration gets serious.
This traditional clinker-built boat needs major structural work, so in this episode we tackle one of the most challenging jobs yet: removing the centre plate casing. It’s a major piece of surgery that reveals more about how Odette was originally built and gives us the access we need to carry out essential repairs.
We also replace damaged and rotten planks using traditional wooden boatbuilding techniques, hand tools and time-honoured methods. Every repair is approached with the aim of preserving as much of the original boat as possible.
But there’s more to restoring an old boat than wood and tools. We also visit the archives to uncover the fascinating history of Odette and discover more about where this remarkable Morgan Giles sailing dinghy was built.
If you enjoy traditional boatbuilding, wooden boat restoration, clinker boats, sailing dinghies, woodworking, craftsmanship, hand tools and watching skilled making and restoration work, this series is for you.
Join us as we bring this beautiful 100-year-old wooden boat back to life, one plank at a time.
