Ja'afar Hassan was a prominent Iraqi-Kurdish singer and composer responsible for pioneering political music in Iraq in the 60's and 70's and establishing the Institute for Liberal Music Studies in Baghdad in 1967. Ja'afar fled Iraq in 1978 when Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party began its political purges, escaping the misery and bloodshed that would envelop the country in the following decades. He recorded and self-released this album abroad in East Germany in 1978, documenting his political songs at a pivotal moment in Iraq's history. Living in exile in Yemen, Ja'afar devoted his life to music, recording over 20 albums and training several generations of Yemeni musicians. He returned to Iraqi Kurdistan in 2004 after the American occupation of Iraq, taking up residence in Erbil. Devastatingly, Ja'afar Hassan passed away earlier this year in April due to complications from covid-19.
