Why does your child with ADHD have a meltdown when it's time to stop playing, leave the house, or move on to another activity? For many children with ADHD, transitions can be particularly challenging. Moving from one activity to another requires executive functioning skills, emotional regulation and cognitive flexibility, which may be difficult for children with ADHD. What looks like defiance or challenging behaviour may actually be a child struggling to manage an overwhelming change. In this video, Dr Inyang Takon, Consultant Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician and host of Early Intervention Matters, explains why transitions can trigger emotional meltdowns and how parents and teachers can support children through these difficult moments. 💡 Practical strategies include: Giving advance warnings before transitions. Using visual schedules and predictable routines. Allowing extra processing time. Staying calm and supporting emotional regulation. Recognising when a child is overwhelmed rather than deliberately refusing instructions. Remember: A meltdown is not necessarily a behavioural choice. Understanding what is happening beneath the surface helps us respond with empathy and practical support. 🌍 Explore more resources: 🧠 Parent Toolkits: https://www.braindiverse.org 🎙️ Early Intervention Matters Podcast 📚 Ask a Developmental Paediatrician on Substack 💬 Join the conversation: Does your child struggle with transitions?
