Chuida 吹打 and shengguan music 笙管乐 from Langfang 廊坊市, Hebei, northern China

An outdoor festival performance featuring two different ensembles performing traditional wind and percussion ensemble music of various genres, including chuida (吹打) and shengguan music (笙管乐). Chuida music features leading suonas (唢呐, shawms), whereas shengguan music uses guanzi (管子, double reed pipe) and dizi (笛子, bamboo flute) as the leading melodic instruments. The ensembles are both part of the Aigezhuang Music Society (Chinese: Aigezhuang Yinyue Hui, 艾各庄音乐会), which is based in Aigezhuang Village (艾各庄村), Wanzhuang Town (万庄镇), Guangyang District (广阳区), Langfang (廊坊市), Hebei province (河北省), northern China. The names of the pieces being performed are also unknown. Filmed at the "Liang Jie" (“两节,” Dual Festivals) in Guangyang District (广阳区), Langfang (廊坊市), Hebei province (河北省), northern China, c. The spoken introduction to the video (as translated by Mr. Yanchen Zhang) is as follows: ====== I am Fu Shijun (付世军), 52 years old this year, the sixth-generation representative inheritor of the Aigezhuang Music Society. In 2017, the Aigezhuang Music Society was certified as [an item of] province-level intangible cultural heritage. In 2018, I was certified as a province-level intangible cultural heritage representative inheritor/transmitter. The Aigezhuang Music Society was established in the Ming Dynasty, after some music lovers listened to Daoist music at the Liangshanpo (梁善坡) [Temple] in the Daxing District of Beijing, and were attracted by this music. With much effort, they found many people, invited many musicians from Liangshanpo to our village, then the Aigezhuang Music Society was established. The Aigezhuang Music Society has experienced many ups and downs. In 1982, [following the Cultural Revolution], my father gathered enthusiasts and some old members, raised 90 yuan and bought some instruments, started leading the Aigezhuang Music Society again to serve the villages. I am the sixth-generation representative inheritor, having started to learn the music from my father beginning at the age of 16. By the time I reached the age of 20, I had mastered all of the musical instruments used by the society. In 2000, my father named me the leader of the Aigezhuang Music Society, called "hui tou" (会头) at that time. Now we have 46 members, with, at present, seven of them being under the age of 30. The youngest one, who is 27 years of age, has knowledge of the range of techniques used in the playing of the da guan, xiao guan, suona, and so on. We have participated in all the cultural and performing arts festivals at the province, city, and district [levels], [in an effort] to serve the rural areas. ====== Jizhong shengguan music (Chinese: Jizhong shengguan yue, 冀中笙管乐) is a genre of traditional instrumental ensemble music for winds and percussion from China's Hebei province, which features the guanzi (管子, double reed pipe) and dizi (笛子, bamboo flute) as leading melodic instruments, usually accompanied by multiple sheng (笙, mouth organ), and percussion (drums, cymbals, gongs, and yunluo 云锣, a set of ten tuned gongs in a frame). In 2006 Jizhong shengguan yue (冀中笙管乐), a collection of shengguan ensemble traditions found across the Central Hebei Plain (which is bounded to the north by Beijing, to the east by Tianjin, and to the south by Cangzhou and Dingzhou, including nearly 30 cities and counties of Hebei province), an area that includes Langfang, was included in the First Batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录). Additionally, in 2017, the Aigezhuang Music Society (Chinese: Aigezhuang Yinyue Hui, 艾各庄音乐会) was included in the Sixth Batch of the Hebei Province List of Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage Items (河北省第六批省级非物质文化遗产名录项目), under the heading of Jizhong shengguanyue (冀中笙管乐).
