The Vocal Range of Dolly Parton

This video showcases the vocal range of country music legend Dolly Parton! Dolly's voice could quite easily be highlighted as the quintessential female "country" voice. That of a soprano, Dolly uses strong vibrato and sings with a distinct Tennessee accent in her music, something music executives considered highly unusual at the time. Dolly most frequently sings in the upper fourth octave and lower fifth octaves, showing tremendous skill and agility in her upper register as she can seamlessly transition from singing in her chest voice to singing beautifully in a softer head voice ("I Wasted My Tears", "I Will Always Love You", "Joshua"). Her lower register is understandably weaker, with Dolly's low notes in the mid third octave sounding particularly uncomfortable and breathy, though over time, Dolly's lower register has strengthened somewhat. While she may not boast an exceptionally large vocal range, Dolly's voice stands out as an amazingly iconic and consistent one, with her singing still sounding as strong today in live performances as it did fifty years ago.
