Is Mexico too expensive in 2026? 🇲🇽
After five trips to Playa del Carmen, we've figured out how to spend two weeks in the Riviera Maya without paying resort prices.
In this video, we break down exactly how two adults can spend two weeks in Playa del Carmen for around $3,000 CAD — including flights, accommodation, food, transportation and a day trip to Cozumel.
And this isn't an all-inclusive resort or a stripped-down backpacking trip. We stay in a new apartment, eat out every night, explore Playa on foot, and enjoy the beach, restaurants and local neighbourhoods.
Here's our 2026 budget strategy:
✈️ Direct flights from Halifax to Cancún — and how we manage carry-on only
🚌 ADO airport transportation instead of expensive airport taxis
🏠 A centrally located apartment rather than a resort
🌮 Local restaurants and taquerías instead of eating on 5th Avenue
🚶 Walking everywhere we can — we average around 20,000 steps a day
🏝️ A day trip to Cozumel
🧺 And a few simple tricks that keep the trip affordable
We've also noticed that Playa del Carmen isn't the same place it was on our first visits. Prices have increased, tourism has changed, and there are legitimate concerns about things like safety and the cost of living. So we're taking a realistic look at what a Playa del Carmen vacation actually costs in 2026.
The goal isn't to pretend Mexico is cheap.
It's to show you how we travel there without spending resort money.
Our approximate two-week budget
✈️ Flights — $1,000
🏠 Apartment — $1,000
🌮 Food — $1,050
🚌 Transportation & Cozumel — $200
Total — approximately $3,250 CAD
With some planning, that's still remarkably close to our $3,000 target — and well below what a comparable resort vacation can cost.
We've been to Playa del Carmen five times. This is what we've learned.
Have you been to Playa recently? Has Mexico become too expensive for you, or are there still ways to make it work? Let us know in the comments!
