A Tuesday morning in Reedy, Texas.
The mercantile open. Two men talking outside the barber shop. A woman crossing the street with a basket.
Nothing urgent was going to happen today.
That's what the town thought.
Then a man in an expensive coat stopped in front of a gray horse at the hitching post. Pulled out fifty cents. And made an offer in front of the whole street.
The horse's owner was still inside the mercantile. A grocery list in his shirt pocket. Flour. Salt. Two items in his wife's careful handwriting.
He came out. Looked at the coin. Looked at the man.
And said something that nobody on that street forgot.

What this episode teaches — and why Spring of 1890 matters:
The Chisholm Trail — the great cattle corridor that had moved millions of longhorns from Texas to Kansas railheads through the 1870s and early 1880s — was over by 1890. The railroad had arrived and changed everything.
Trail towns across Texas were in transition. The raw economy of the cattle drives had produced one kind of man — lean, road-worn, precise, someone who had learned to read situations before they became dangerous. The settled economy of 1890 was producing another kind entirely — men in expensive coats who had learned to use legal instruments instead of guns. Land acquisitions. Water rights. Supply monopolies. Men who had been profitable long enough to forget what it felt like to be wrong.
On a Tuesday morning in April, those two versions of Texas met at a hitching post.
Scout settled the question before anyone had to.
