Although the maximum operating speed is set at 260 km/h, speeds have historically been restricted along the approximately 82-kilometer shared section (between Shin-Nakaoguni Signal Station and Kikonai)—which includes the Seikan Tunnel—due to challenges involving passing conventional trains and snow removal operations. To address these speed limitations, the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT) announced in June 2026 that it would conduct high-speed test runs in the open-air sections. The trains selected for these tests were JR Hokkaido’s H5 Series and the JRTT-owned E2 Series (Set H66)—featuring the classic 200 Series livery (formerly JR East Set J66). Stepping into the spotlight to take the place of the H5 Series—which lacks the operational flexibility for such testing—is the green-striped E2 Series train. Carrying on the legacy of the 200 Series, the Hokkaido Shinkansen takes on the challenge of achieving even higher speeds.
