Does a projectile really stop when it reaches its highest point? It looks like it does—but the physics is more interesting than you might think.
In this video, we visually explore what actually happens to a projectile at maximum height. At the highest point, the vertical velocity becomes zero, but does that mean the projectile has completely stopped?
Not quite.
The projectile still has horizontal velocity, while gravity continues to act downward. This is why the projectile can reach maximum height, momentarily have Vᵧ = 0, and then begin moving downward.
In this visual explanation, you'll understand:
🔹 What happens at the highest point of projectile motion
🔹 Why vertical velocity becomes zero at maximum height
🔹 Why Vᵧ = 0 does NOT mean V = 0
🔹 How horizontal velocity continues during projectile motion
🔹 Why gravity never stops acting on the projectile
🔹 How the projectile starts falling after reaching maximum height
🔹 The difference between velocity and acceleration
🔹 Velocity components in projectile motion
🔹 The mathematics behind maximum height
🔹 Why the trajectory continues smoothly through the highest point
The key idea:
Vᵧ = 0 ≠ V = 0
At maximum height:
Vertical velocity → 0
Horizontal velocity → continues
Acceleration due to gravity → downward
So the projectile doesn't actually stop.
It only stops vertically.
This video is designed to make projectile motion visible, rather than simply giving you formulas to memorize.
