Of the roughly 200 big lakes in Texas, only one formed on its own: Caddo Lake on the Louisiana border, made by a logjam more than a hundred miles long. Every other big lake in Texas is a reservoir behind a dam, and even Caddo is held up by one today. Here's why Texas got no big natural lakes of its own (the ice sheets never came this far south, the rivers drain everything to the Gulf, and the sun takes the rest), how the 1950s Drought of Record made Texas build almost three new lakes a year for forty years, and what those lakes are doing now: drying to 2 percent, refilling overnight, drowning old towns, and pushing one Texas city to the edge of running out of water.
