Arniston (or Waenhuiskrans) is a historic coastal village in South Africa’s Overberg, uniquely recognized by two official names. Its history is defined by three key eras. Home to ancient Khoisan people who built stone fish traps still visible today. Its Afrikaans name refers to a massive sea cave large enough to fit an ox-wagon . The Shipwreck (1815): Renamed after the British transport ship Arniston, which ran aground during a storm. Only six of the 378 people on board survived, making it one of South Africa’s deadliest maritime disasters. Kassiesbaai: A 200-year-old National Heritage site known for its white-washed, thatched cottages. Built by a resilient fishing community using wood from shipwreck crates (kassies), it survived forced removals during the Apartheid era.
