How can an LNG carrier hold liquefied natural gas at −162°C while crossing an ocean without its tanks cracking or pressure rising out of control? This documentary goes inside the hidden engineering of LNG shipping. Natural gas is cooled until it becomes liquid and occupies roughly 600 times less volume—making global transport possible, but creating one of the most demanding cargo environments at sea. Discover how LNG carriers manage: • Moss spherical tanks and membrane containment systems • Insulation, secondary barriers and double-hull protection • Loading arms, pre-cooling, cargo pumps and sloshing • Boil-off gas, reliquefaction and gas-powered propulsion • Gas detection, inert spaces and emergency shutdown systems • The small LNG “heel” retained after unloading Even the best insulation cannot stop all heat from entering the tanks. Some of the cargo continually becomes boil-off gas, forcing the ship to control pressure throughout the voyage—either by using the gas as fuel or returning it to liquid form. The documentary also follows the type of Q-Max voyage made between Ras Laffan, Qatar, and Tianjin, China, revealing how these enormous ships transport LNG safely across the ocean.
