National Cycle Network Route 6 (NCN 6) is a varied and rewarding long-distance cycle route stretching approximately 477 miles (767 km) from the outskirts of London to the city of Carlisle, close to the Scottish border. It follows a course through a rich mix of landscapes – canal towpaths, quiet country lanes, old railway trails, national parks, and English towns.
The route travels north through towns including Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Derby and Sheffield before crossing the Peak District and continuing on to Lancaster and Carlisle. Surfaces vary throughout – from smooth tarmac and quiet lanes to gravel tracks and canal towpaths. A touring, gravel or hybrid bike with wider tyres is the best choice.
