What you wear underneath the armour of God matters just as much as the armour itself. Ephesians 6 gives believers one of the most powerful passages in all of Scripture, describing the full armour of God and calling them to stand firm against the enemy. But there is a word at the very beginning of that passage that changes everything: finally. That single word tells us that before the armour, before the battle, there are foundations that need to be in place. Ephesians walks believers through four essential ways of living before the armour is ever introduced. Walking in unity, walking in love, walking in light, and walking in wisdom. These are not optional steps. They are the groundwork that makes lasting spiritual breakthrough possible. God is not looking for a flash of power. He is looking for consistency, and in that consistency lies the real strength. God has also clothed every believer in spiritual garments described in Isaiah 61. A garment of praise given in exchange for a spirit of heaviness. A robe of righteousness. Garments of salvation. These are not things to earn. They are gifts already given, waiting to be worn. The challenge is learning to see yourself the way God sees you in the realm of the Spirit. Every single piece of the armour of God points directly to Jesus Christ. He is the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. When you bring your life into the reality of who He is, He becomes your armour. The mind is the battlefield. The belt of truth keeps every thought in check, and the shield of faith is designed to quench the fiery thoughts the enemy fires at believers every day. Thoughts like you are no good, you do not belong, this cannot be healed, or God does not love you. These thoughts are personal and targeted. But God has given His people the tools to fight back. Fighting thoughts with truth is practical and powerful. Say no to the thought. Forgive anyone whose words have caused damage. Then declare what the Word of God says out loud. Passivity does not produce warriors. Active faith does.
