Muldraugh, Kentucky is one of the real American towns that helped inspire Project Zomboid. The developers based the in-game town on the real Muldraugh, using its general road layout, rural setting and location near Fort Knox as inspiration.
The real Muldraugh had 1,040 residents in the 2020 Census and sits almost completely surrounded by the Fort Knox military installation. Its history goes back to around 1790, although it wasn’t officially incorporated until 1952.
The town really began to grow after becoming a railroad stop in 1882. By the late 1800s it had a hotel, stockyard, stores, blacksmiths, a telegraph office and other businesses serving travelers and local farmers.
Today it’s a quiet town of around a thousand people, but its unusual location near Fort Knox and its role in Project Zomboid have made Muldraugh recognizable to people all over the world.
