General Motors recalled 597,630 trucks and SUVs with the 6.2 liter L87 V8, and most owners got the same thing: an inspection, eight quarts of thicker 0W-40 oil, a new oil cap, and a letter promising 10 years or 150,000 miles of coverage. Retired mechanic Mateo Salazar walks through what that coverage actually says, line by line, and where it stops.
GM's own Special Coverage bulletin excludes valvetrain and top end failures, which means lifter and cam problems sit outside the recall. The 10 year clock starts on the original in-service date, not the recall date, so a 2021 truck lost four years before the first letter was mailed. Engines that passed inspection kept the same crankshaft, and GM itself has reported 6,953 complaints of engine failure after the recall fix.
The federal safety agency has now expanded its investigation to 997,743 trucks and SUVs from the 2021 through 2026 model years, including engines built after the recall window. Mateo gives GM's side in full, explains the rod bearing failure the recall was written around, and shows why the one thing that held up for owners in a denied warranty fight was a stack of receipts.
Covered: 2021 to 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV with the L87 6.2 V8, the Special Coverage program, NHTSA recall query RQ26001 and engineering analysis EA26005, the AFM and DFM lifter class action, and how the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects owners who keep their records.
